The DIY market in a few figures
|
According to the latest data, the French DIY market has seen contrasting trends in recent years. After a period of strong growth during the pandemic-related confinements, the sector recorded a decline of1.4% in value in 2023, reaching sales of around24 billion euros. In 2024, a market contraction estimated at 7.5% was observed, largely due to a drop in real estate transactions, from 935,000 in 2023 to around 750,000 in 2024.
The market remains dominated by four major groups, which hold 93% of market share. Leading the way is the Adeo group, owner of seven DIY chains, including Leroy Merlin, Bricoman and Weldom. It is followed by Kingfisher (owner of Brico Dépôt and Castorama), then by Les Mousquetaires and Mr Bricolage.
Despite these challenges, DIY remains a popular activity in France, with a majority of French people enjoying the activity in their spare time. On average, every French household continues to invest significant sums in home improvement, particularly in DIY and gardening equipment.
A changing market
Thedo-it-yourself market has been undergoing profound changes in recent years. In the wake of Brico-Dépôt launched in 1993 by Castorama, many new discount chains have emerged including Bricoman from the Adeo group, Batkor, Bricorama, l'Entrepôt du Bricolage...
These new chains have largely changed the market and consumer attitudes. With as many distributor brands (private labels) as possible for fewer national brands, a reduced choice of SKUs, and ultra-low prices, discounters are gaining market share.
The other major trend of recent years is also to bring added value to stores in the form of advice, training, services home fitting, iPhone apps, e-commerce.... These added services are driven by an obvious fact: today's do-it-yourselfers don't have the same profile as in the past. And indeed, some twenty years ago, DIY was essentially reserved for connoisseurs.
The DIY market in France continues to grow, with interesting results for 2023 and 2024. E-commerce revenues in the Bricolage / Jardinage sector have grown considerably, doubling in five years, although online sales are still marginal, accounting for around 9% of sector sales in 2023 and 2024.
The DIY market observed a slight contraction in 2023, notably with an estimated decline of 2% compared to 2022. This could be attributed to economic uncertainties, but also to increased competition from online platforms. However, it remains a key sector for the French economy, with its share still dominated by large physical retailers and their strong presence on the outskirts of towns.
In 2024, DIY continues to be democratized, with an increase in the number of women embarking on more ambitious DIY projects, accompanied by a similar trend among men, who seek to cut costs by carrying out work themselves rather than using craftsmen. This evolution in consumer profiles is prompting retailers to adapt their offerings, provide more personalized services and meet a growing demand for do-it-yourself products accessible to all.
