In France, supermarkets account for no less than 800,000 jobs. According to the'INSEE, by 2030 this will be the sector generating the most jobs in France, along with personal services. Hiring in this branch of activity, which brings together a wide range of professions, is taking place at all levels.
Our recruitment and strategy consultancy presents the trends in the sector and the qualities required to be recruited.

Focus on traditional supermarkets and the organic sector
Not surprisingly, the COVID-19 crisis in March 2020 has had a major impact on the job market, with many sectors forced to halt activity altogether. According to Indeed, the volume of job offers has fallen by 7% in 1 year, particularly for catering, training and sales and business development professions.
In contrast, other sectors were not impacted by the health crisis and even saw a spike in their activity. Among them, we find unsurprisingly the grande distribution with a increase of 38% in sales during the first containment and more than 15,000 job offers to be filled in March 2021 for the "classic" food sector.
Beyond Covid-19, the advent of online shopping, the development of click & collect, the demand for short circuits and transparency, consumer habits are constantly evolving, as is the number of stores. Indeed, there are nearly 44,000 general food outlets throughout France! To respond to these changes and offer a personalized shopping experience, distribution and sales professions are constantly developing and recruiting.

Drives and supermarket delivery services are growing strongly, with an increase of 75% over 2020-2021! Employment in this sector is also on the rise: +8% recruitment over 2020.
Organics also creates jobs: we're seeing a increase in hiring of over 15% this year in this sector! With over 4,000 organic stores in France, and the emergence of new trends such as bulk, zero waste and local consumption, the growth in organic stores is estimated at +10% over the year 2020, and many new hires are expected.
According to l'Agence Bio, the organic market exceeded 13 billion euros in sales, up 10.4%
Companies recruiting in the retail sector
The Carrefour is committed! It has announced the recruitment of 15,000 young people over 2021. The brand is offering 50% of positions to be filled in 2021 and is committed on two fronts:
Recruiting young people and combating inequality.

Zoom on CODIR in retail
In supermarkets as elsewhere, head office management committees (CODIR) are recruiting. Depending on the structure and internal organization, they comprise a general manager +
- A sales manager,
- An IT manager,
- A marketing director,
- A D.R.H,
- An administrative and financial director (DAF),
- A logistics director.
Within the CODIR, le directeur RH, the sales manager or the CFO must demonstrate the same qualities. Each brings added value to the management and overall vision of the company. They must both demonstrate a collaborative spirit and know how to take charge of resources (technical, human, notoriety, clientele, brand, concept...), and add value to them.
An emerging trend of late is to create a junior CODIR, also known as "shadow comex" or "shadow codir",in parallel to the classic CODIR.
The principle being to set up a committee with young executives (25 - 35 years old) representative of the company's main functions and activities. The aim? To bring a fresh, critical perspective to the strategy and ideas of senior executives.
