Employment and unemployment trends in the third quarter 2009

A recovery in activity is confirmed, but employment continues to contract...

Despite a rebound in interim employment, salaried job losses in the non-agricultural market sector continued at the same rate as in the 2nd quarter: -93,100 jobs, after -93,500 in the previous quarter. Job losses increasedéin the service sector excluding intérim (-64,600, after -34,700) and in construction (-16,100, after -11,800), while they stabilizedéin industry (-49,400).

In the non-market sector, the number of beneficiaries of aid contracts rose sharply in the 3rd quarter of 2009 (+32,000). Overall, the decline in employment in the economy as a whole is estimatedé à -47,000 jobs in the 3rd quarter, after -83,000 in the previous quarter.

The number of registered jobseekers àPôle Emploi, all categories combined, continued éàto rise, àalbeit at a slower pace (+152,000, after +198,000 in the 2nd quarter). In the eurozone, despiteé confirmation of the recovery, the unemployment rate continued to riseéto ’établish à 9.6 % of the working population à at the end of the 3rd quarter 2009, 0.3 points higher than in the previous quarter.
