Retailers make little use of Sunday openings

According to a survey conducted by the Fédération du commerce associé among 7,600 stores and 20 groupings among its members, Sunday opening is poorly acceptedéand the law little exploitedée. Only 25% of chain stores have opened on Sundays in tourist areas since the law was passed. The majorityé of outlets would not even open on the five Sundays in question, à 80% for éeconomic reasons. Food stores and textile chains, however, would like to be able to open 8 à 10 Sundays a year. Most retailers do not want to go against à the mayor's policy when he or she is not in favor à of Sunday opening. Overall, 60% of store managers remain opposed to à Sunday opening. The three main reasons are increased costs for a third of respondents, and reduced quality of life for buyers and sellers (25%). « At a time when some governments are submitting tourist zone extensions without having received a request from the mayor of the municipality concerned, 80% of FCA members point out that this measure must not êbe éextended à to the whole of France » states the communiqué. Récemment, le center commercial de Thiais à renoncé à l'ouverture dominicale qui était prévue en janvier, tandis que Leroy-Merlin a signé des accords avec les salariés sur le sujet.
