Been interested in the company since its inception
Acceding to a position as CEO, HR Director, CFO... implies taking an interest in the company: its history and positioning. First of all, its history, the path it has taken: where is it in its life cycle? Is it in a start-up or consolidation phase? Positioning and growth: how is the company positioned in its market? Is it a leader or a challenger? What are its strengths and weaknesses? Taking an interest in the company from its inception will help you understand at what key stage you're applying.
Knowing the company's values
Another essential point, and not the easiest to find if you want to be part of the management committee: company values. They form an integral part of the company's strategy and generate commitment among its employees. They are the moral and societal principles on which the company is founded, and on which employees and managers base their decisions and missions. Understanding the company's values and projecting yourself into them will enable you to know if you really want to work there.
Know how the management committee is constituted
Wanting to join a company's management committee also means knowing its composition at the time you apply: where it comes from and what its background is. How has this select group evolved over time? How long have they been with the company? You'll find this kind of information by researching on the Internet, find the managers on LinkedIn for example and/or by reading the specialist press. Taking an interest in the composition of the current management committee will allow you to, project yourself there.
Determining your position in the company
In your application, you must also be able to demonstrate your ability to position yourself within the company in terms of professional appetence and expertise, position yourself as a service provider: what will you bring to the management committee? What will be your added value in relation to the other members? In so doing, you'll be demonstrating the field in which you excel, and the way in which you would be able to support an executive committee through your personal and specialized mastery. Determining your positioning within the company will enable you to give meaning to your function and envisage synergies.
Enhance your managerial skills
A CFO, GM or HRD must also have proven managerial skills: are you a good leader? Are you fair to all the members of your team?
Prove that you are capable of managing a team directly, helping it to progress and trusting it. Are you capable of sanctioning? Explain how employees are more effective in your presence. Showcase your "relational intelligence". Highlighting your managerial skills will enable you to talk about your ethical and human values.
Show your managerial courage
Far from the effects of fashion, managerial courage is a rare quality, much sought-after among executives and managers in companies. Because companies evolve, can be bought out or merge, you need to be able to take risks and assume them to move your organization forward. Do you face up to problems? Do you know how to make difficult decisions? Do you remain objective in all circumstances? Showing managerial courage will enable you to demonstrate that you know how to take responsibility for the progress of your company, your employees.
